Umbrella Liability
Umbrella liability is a higher-limit liability policy that may sit over underlying policies such as commercial auto or general liability.
Plain-English summary
The value of an umbrella depends on which underlying policies it follows, what exclusions it contains, and whether the requested limit is available for the exposure a contract cares about. It is not a blanket upgrade for every coverage line.
Why trucking contracts ask for it
Large shippers, construction projects, ports, and warehouse customers may request limits above the base auto liability policy. The agent should confirm whether the umbrella applies to the specific coverage line named in the contract.

Questions carriers ask
Does an umbrella increase cargo limits?
Usually no. Cargo is normally a separate coverage line. Ask specifically if a higher cargo limit is needed.
