Policy Period
The policy period is the span of time during which an insurance policy is in force, usually shown as a start date and expiration date on the declarations page.
Plain-English summary
Coverage generally applies to events that occur during the policy period. Gaps between policy periods—including delays in renewal binding—can expose a carrier to uninsured losses and interrupt FMCSA financial responsibility filings.
Why policy period dates need to be verified
- A covered event must typically occur during the policy period to be eligible under that policy
- FMCSA financial responsibility filings reference specific effective and cancellation dates
- A carrier switching insurers must confirm the new policy effective date is not later than the old policy expiration
- Certificate requests should reflect coverage that is active for the dates required by the job or contract
Mid-policy changes and their effective dates
Adding a truck, removing a driver, or changing cargo mid-policy creates an endorsement with its own effective date. That date matters in a claim. A vehicle added after an accident occurred may not be covered for that event, even if it was added to the same policy.

Questions carriers ask
Does a policy automatically renew at the end of the policy period?
No. Coverage ends at the expiration date unless a renewal is bound and in force before that date. Assuming automatic continuation is a common mistake that can result in a lapse.
