Adjuster

An adjuster is a person assigned to investigate, evaluate, and help resolve a claim on behalf of the insurer, or in the case of a public adjuster, on behalf of the insured.

Plain-English summary

The adjuster reviews the facts of the loss, the policy terms, and available documentation to evaluate coverage and recommend a resolution. Providing accurate and complete information to the adjuster is in the carrier's interest.

Types of adjusters in trucking claims

  • Staff adjuster: employed directly by the insurer to handle claims
  • Independent adjuster: an outside contractor retained by the insurer for specific claim types or regions
  • Third-party administrator (TPA): manages claims for self-insured programs or large fleet accounts
  • Public adjuster: hired and paid by the policyholder to represent the insured's interests in a claim dispute

Helping the adjuster work efficiently

Providing organized documentation early—photos, police reports, bills of lading, temperature logs, ELD records, and witness contacts—reduces delays in the claim process. Coverage questions about what is or is not covered should go to the agent while the claim is being evaluated.

Who runs into this after a loss or renewal

  • Owner-operators reading a quote
  • New authorities preparing documents
  • Small fleets reviewing certificates or claims

Why the record matters

  • Where the term appears
  • How to discuss it with an agent
  • Why the definition can affect coverage

Where claim shorthand gets risky

What the record does not decide by itself

  • A standalone guarantee of coverage
  • A substitute for policy wording
  • Legal advice about a contract

Recordkeeping mistakes

  • Treating informal shorthand as policy language
  • Assuming the same word means the same thing in every policy

Files to keep available

  • Policy declarations
  • Certificates
  • Endorsements
  • Contracts or official filing notices when relevant

Questions for claim or renewal review

  • Where is this term defined in the policy?
  • Does an endorsement change the meaning?
  • Does a regulator or contract use the term differently?

Questions carriers ask

Is the adjuster's coverage determination final?

Not necessarily. If the carrier believes a determination is incorrect or incomplete, options may include providing additional documentation, requesting supervisory review, or engaging an attorney or public adjuster. The available options depend on the policy terms and applicable state law.
